I wanted to remain anonymous, because this site is about Lovecraft, Cthulhu and the horrors of the deep. Though I know that subtleties of my personality will surface as I am working on the stories, this site isn't about me. With this blog I want to create a new universe filled with characters that might have come out of the works of the Cthulhu mythos. Still the next story is true, and all about me and how some story influenced me to create this site:
I once visited Slovenia with my girlfriend at the time. During the trip I was reading Lovecraft in the evenings. We were sleeping in a little tent on an abandoned campingsite near a lake. One night I went skinny-dipping in the lake, my girlfriend stayed ashore. We were both a little drunk and she was laughing, as I dove into the water. I could feel how the cold water was surrounding my body. I dove deeper into the darkness. Suddenly I remembered a tale about Dagon, one of the Lovecraftian creatures. At that moment I could swear that something touched my arm. I leaped out of the water in no less than a second, totally sobered up. My girl, looking pale, asked what was the matter. I didn't answer. The next morning we packed our tent and went to another town.
Before you think that I'm all cuckoo in the head: I believe that nothing touched me that night in the water. A little fish maybe, but certainly not a monstrosity such as Cthulhu. I find it quite remarkable though that in 1926 some guy writes a story that made me leap out of the water 80 years later after I had read it. Therefor if you haven't read Lovecraft. If you haven't felt the fear.. you haven't really lived.
